- The Hong Kong International Airport opened its doors for service on the 6 July 1998.
- Construction of the HKIA took 6 years, and US$ 20 billion to complete.
- The Hong Kong International Airport rests on an artificially created island – the result of a land reclamation that produced an area of 1248ha specifically to house the airport.
- Land reclamation for the airport added close to 1% to the entirety of Hong Kong’s surface area.
- With a total floor space of 570 000 square metres, the Hong Kong International Airport is nine times the size of the old Kai Tak Terminal – currently making it the world’s largest airport terminal building (however, this is soon to be overtaken by the Beijing Capital International Airport, should their 2007 building projections remain on course).
- The passenger terminal is 1.27km (0.8miles) long.
- To cope with the large size, there is an Automated People Mover (APM) internal shuttle between the East and West Halls which travels every 3 minutes.
- There are 74 moving walkways in total (30 in the Arrivals hall, 34 in Departures, and 10 at the Ground Transportation Centre).
- Over 40 million passengers passed through the Hong Kong International Airport in 2005.
- There are 15 000 seats in the airport, and 9 900 Luggage trolleys.
- The car parks can accommodate 2 400 cars.
