Discover Po Lin Monastery at Pnong Ping, built by three reclusive monks in 1905. Po Lin, meaning Precious Lotus, is flanked by Lantau’s highest mountain, Lantau Peak which is 934m above sea level. Originally stone huts only accessible by foot, by the 1960s it was a small temple, and in 1970 grand, brightly coloured monastery buildings were opened, with three Buddhas seated on Lotus flowers and a Lotus pond outside. In 1933 the Big Buddha, which is 34m high, was completed, making it the largest outdoor, seated bronze Buddha in the world. Traditionalist complain that Po Lin is no longer a Buddhist experience, but has become a major tourist attraction, and visitors can also visit Ngong Ping Village with a number of cultural displays including the Heart Sutra, a classic Buddhist text, carved into wooden logs.
