Hong Kong Airport Skymart

One of the great features of the Skymart is that it operates on a “Downtown Pricing Guarantee”, which states that prices at the Skymart will not be higher than those at the retailers’ own Hong Kong downtown outlets operating under the same business name, for an identical item.
However, having said this, the Skymart’s downtown pricing guarantee also stipulates that it only covers regular priced items; not items on sale.

Other Shopping

This is important to bear in mind, as this does exclude a large number of items found outside the airport. Not only are there a multitude of different shops which cannot be found at the Hong Kong International Airport (and thus do not qualify for the downtown pricing guarantee), but there are often items at “informal sale prices” which the Skymart will not match.

Different stores in different locations have different operation hours. For example, most of the retail outlets situated in the East Hall, Level 6 operate from 0700 to 2300. However, some East Hall outlets operate until 2330 or in some cases, midnight.

There are a couple of things to bear in mind when it comes to shopping at the Hong Kong International Airport.
One of these is that if time allows to venture out the airport, it is of course prudent to “check around” the prices in the town before purchasing upon arrival, and perhaps save this until departure.
For example, when it comes to certain items, such as watches, cameras, electronics and computers, more often than not the cheapest item can be found outside the Hong Kong International Airport.

However, when it comes to other items, such as make up brands, fragrances, alcohol and tobacco, these are generally speaking at a better deal within the Hong Kong International airports duty-free stores. Because Hong Kong is a duty- free port, it is really only on the dutiable items (alcohol and tobacco) that there is a marked saving in these duty-free stores.
For more details on dutiable items, it’s always a good idea to check out the Customs and Excise Department of the Hong Kong Government’s website.

General public consensus is:

  • Electronic related equipment – buy OUTSIDE the airport.
  • Alcohol and tobacco – buy at the Duty Free stores.

In terms of currency needed, most of the retail outlets and catering facilities will accept major foreign currencies, such as US$, Euro’s, etc. And, of course, credit card’s are accepted most places – in fact, the only exception is the Café de Coral, a food outlet on the 7th Level in the East Hall.
There are, however, several currency exchange locations through the passenger terminal.

Handy Travel tip: some travellers have found that simply using the ATMs located throughout the building provide an equal – if not better – exchange rate than the foreign exchanges.
